Absinthe has been frequently and incorrectly described in modern times as being hallucinogenic. In the 1970s, a scientific paper mistakenly reported thujone was related to THC, the active chemical in cannabis.[58] Martin Paul Smith incorrectly argued that absinthe had narcotic effects due to the fermentation process in early 2008.[59]

Ten years after his 19th century experiments with wormwood oil, the French Dr. Magnan studied 250 cases of alcoholism and claimed that those who drank absinthe were worse off than those drinking ordinary alcohol, and that they experienced rapid-onset hallucinations.[60] Such accounts by absinthe opponents were embraced by its most famous users, many of whom were bohemian artists or writers.[61]

Two famous painters who helped popularize the notion that absinthe had powerful psychoactive properties were Toulouse Lautrec and Vincent van Gogh, the latter having suffered from mental instability throughout his life. In one of the best known accounts of absinthe drinking, Oscar Wilde described the feeling of having tulips on his legs after leaving a bar.[62]

Today it is known that absinthe does not cause hallucinations.[63] Thujone, the active chemical in absinthe, is a GABA antagonist; and while it can produce muscle spasms in large doses, there is no evidence that it causes hallucinations.[63] It has been speculated that reports of hallucinogenic effects of absinthe may have been due to poisonous chemicals being added to cheaper versions of the drink in the 19th century, to give it a more vivid color.[64]

However, the debate over whether absinthe produces effects on the human mind additional to those of alcohol has not been conclusively resolved. The effects of absinthe have been described by some as mind opening.[63] The most commonly reported experience is a 'clear-headed' feeling of inebriation — a form of 'lucid drunkenness'.[65] Chemist, historian and absinthe distiller Ted Breaux has claimed that the alleged secondary effects of absinthe may be caused by the fact that some of the herbal compounds in the drink act as stimulants, while others act as sedatives, creating an overall lucid effect of awakening.[66]

Long term effects of low absinthe consumption in humans remain unknown, although the herbs in absinthe have both painkilling[67] and antiparasitic[68] properties.

Thinks of all the idiots who smoke weed and say they "saw hallucinations" or "tripped balls." THC may enhance/distort basic sensations like taste, touch, smell and vision...and at the most extreme it will distort passages of time. But you don't see purple unicorns.

Having said that, THC is still a psychoactive drug but Caffeine is too....

For someone who has never smoked weed but ingested it in the form of a strongly baked good, I can strongly say that I saw colors the first time I was really high. Was it a purple unicorn? No, but it was a similar sensation as to when you press your eyes in while they are closed and you can see weird flashes of light/color. Obviously, I was a light weight when it happened and I'm not sure I'll ever do that again it was that devastating. Anyway, I guess I just wanted to make that point....It was kind of like continuous lighting flashes of the brain waves, that's the best way I can describe that first time. It sucked, considering I had to get on an airplane.

By the way, if you're in Chicago you should come out to Schuba's on April 1st. My band is playing there. You're in Chicago right?

Strongest I've ever had was 80% vodka that someone who lives in my hallway had. It's the stuff they water down before putting it out to retail. It didn't even taste bad at all, just tasted the way rubbing alcohol smells. Potent as hell though. That night, and I shit you not here, I spent the majority of the evening being Jack Bauer.

Sort of not really. I didn't have a water pipe so I tried to make one out of a water bottle, tin foil, and straws...think I just ended up inhaling plastic fumes instead of the salvia...not good.

I don't know which was stronger but I've had some "odd" concoctions when I lived in France and I drink Absinthe fairly regularly.

I am in Chicago, but for school. I'm going to be out of town for my Spring Break that week for a couple of days, but I'll see what I can do. I would like to see you guys live...but only for you. I'll be the naked guy.
