The reason it was a big deal was because Nintendo was the only company actually MAKING money off console sales opposed to Microsoft and SONY who were losing $100 or so for each console sale.

Nintendo as far as I know has never lost money on their consoles.
I mean unlike Sony and MS they don't have other departments to keep them afloat.

Anyhow, no one is jumping on, but I guess would be cool for current Wii owners, apparently Amazon will be having some deals on key Wii games to celebrate the price drop launch (?)
