Been powering my way through Tennant seasons over past few weeks. And did Eccleston before that, good but still prefer smith

Is there a reason for the long hiatus? It feels like it's been two years since the last season, and that confuses me considering the push they gave Dr. Who in the states at that time, filming in the US and having Matt Smith do a tour. I'll admit, the new season looks utterly epic (I love the darker side of DW), but this isn't how you go about building an audience...

I think it's just the awesomeness.. though has been nearly a year since last season.. we did have the Christmas special.
