What is the deal with with hentai?

This is sort of in response to those pictures that CubeDojo posted in that "Is there a doctor in the house?" thread. I was just wondering why hentai is so popular. Personally I think the idea of cartoon characters having sex with each other is disgusting (What's next, a Scooby Doo orge?). And it's not just that they're having sex, it's that they do the sickest, most sadistic things imaginable. That stuff is gross as hell. And what's even sadder is that the artists who work on this stuff are actually very talented (Accurately drawing the human anatomy can't be easy, mind you.). That talented just goes to waste.

Would you be rather them doing that in a real life situation?
