Vince screwed Bret.
It all started with Vince's own problems, backing out of Bret's contract, giving him creative control, etc. Then if what we know about the screwjob is true, Vince did indeed agree to use one of Bret's ideas to get the belt off him. Bret didn't even wanna leave WWF and took less money to stay with them. He was more loyal than you could ever be to Vince, and Vince just lies to him right then and there. Vince could have told Bret "No" when he gave him his idea, but he didn't, he agreed and screwed him.
