I assume you haven't seen the movies? The the first Terminator, the Terminator is sent back in time to kill this woman (forgot her name) who will later have a son who will become the leader of the rebellion against the Terminators in the future.
In T2, a
different Terminator is sent back in time to kill the son (the one who becomes the leader) after he's born. The son from the future reprograms the original Terminator to protect his past self, instead of trying to kill his mother.
So, in the first movie the Terminator is the bad guy and in the second one he's the good guy.
