Am I the only person who feels that rep is useless and a total waste? And to think that people actually care so much about it... I guess it makes them feel superior to other people just because they don't have as much rep.

No, there are different reputation groups you are in, depending on your rep level. You can get and do certain things depending on your reputation level.
